How important are Dreams in the novel “Of Mice Of Men” Essay

In the novel ‘Of Mice Of Men’ there are many themes which set aside the characters from others, however all of them have one thing in common-they all have dreams. Lennie and George share a dream of owning there own land and later on Candy wants to join them. This shows that everyone in the novel needs dreams to keep them going through life. This shows that the title question applies greatly because dreams keep the novel moving along and make the novel interesting. Everyone has needs but everyone also has wants. All the themes in ‘of mice of men’ contribute towards everyone’s loneliness and then making everyone dependent on dreams. The novel is set in the time of the depression in 1930s America so there is much loneliness which makes people think of dreams. Because of the depression there weren’t many jobs around so there were a lot of migrant workers. These workers travelled all over America to find jobs. Because they travelled a lot they were not able to make any friends, which would make them lonely. This would cause them to have dreams and to constantly think about them whenever they’re lonely. Because depression is around poverty is also present. Dreams always come up in conversations, especially Lennie’s conversations. Lennie is the one who brings up the subject all the time, ‘An live off the fatta the lan.’ Lennie always talks about caring for rabbits, ‘An have Rabbits.’ Sexism is also linked in with dreams because Curley’s wife has a dream of becoming a Hollywood movie star. She is the only woman on the ranch and gets lonely because she has no one to talk to. She has her dreams to overcome her loneliness and she has something to hope and look forward to. Ageism is another factor, which affects dreams because Crooks is old and disabled. Crooks is jealous that George and Lennie have each other to go around. Crooks is alone and gets lonely but Lennie and George can always speak to each other. They all need dreams to cover up their loneliness. They all can think and imagine their dreams. Dreams will make the characters happy and forget about everything else. This is why it is an important theme because it effects all the characters. George and Lennie are the main characters who are not alone and share a dream of owning a farm. They are the lucky characters. Nearly all of the characters in the novel have a dream. Curley and the Boss don’t seem to have anything. George and Lennie have a dream and have each other to look after. Their dream is to have a house, own a couple of acres of land, a cow and some pigs. Lennies also wants some rabbits. ‘ I ain’t no people†¦ I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain’t no good.’ This quote shows us that George likes having Lennie around him otherwise he would be lonely like the other ranch workers. The relationship between George and Lennie is sacred because they are more than just friends. Both George and Lennie share the same dream and this makes them more alike because they want the same things. George is a clever, stocky man and Lennie is a gentle giant who can lift heavy objects on his own. They both care about each other because they have been together for a while. George does feel sorry for Lennie but he does sometimes wishes that Lennie wasn’t with him because he drags George down by being mentally challenged. Lennie does say that he can go away onto the mountains, but George doesn’t want to hurt his feelings or make him feel pain in any way. He also feels that he wouldn’t be able take care of himself in the mountains. Lennie is very dependent on George for things and George also depends on Lennie for companionship. Candy has also had a dream of owning a farm where he can be useful again. Candy in very interested in George and Lennie’s dream and thinks it can all really work out because they all have each other and they would nearly have enough money to buy a farm because of Candy’s extra 350 dollars. â€Å"Tell you what – He leaned forward eagerly. ‘S’spose I went in with you guys. Tha’s three hundred an’ fifty bucks I’d put in.† George and Lennie are very tempted at this offer because it would mean their dream would finally come true. Candy has to have dreams because he has no one to talk to after Carlson shot his dog, † If you want me to, I’ll put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with.† Candy’s dog helped him through life because he was lonely and now that he’s dead he needs a dream to look forward to and hope for. That’s why he wants to join with Lennie and George. Candy is old and disabled so he is lonely, which restricts him to doing certain things which makes him lonely. Most of the characters want there dream to come true and then they want to relax in it. Curley’s wife also has a dream of becoming a Hollywood movie star. She wants to become an actress and become famous, but we soon know this doesn’t come true, in fact the death of Curley’s wife brings an end to all dreams in the novel because of how the death happened with Lennie. Curley’s wife is lonely because she has no one to talk too because there are no other women on the ranch and Curley just tells her to be quiet and go back inside the ranch. Curley’s wife plays around and flirts with others to get attention, this attraction was fatal between herself and Lennie and ended her dream of being an actress. Curley’s wife spends a lot of time on her own, hence the need for dreams in her life. She is unhappy with her ranch life and wants a Hollywood life. Since she has nothing to do she gets involved with other characters like George and Lennie which trigger off serious incidents that later happen. Curley’s wife relates to the theme of sexism in the 1930’s. She is treated unfairly by her husband and cannot do any work on the ranch to keep herself occupied because she is a women. The other ranch workers think and have dreams because they are very lonely because at that time when Steinbeck wrote the novel the depression was happening. This meant that workers had to travel around America looking for jobs. This made them very lonely and they thought of the same dreams as George and Lennie but we never experienced any come true in the novel. They have nothing to do and so they just read comics and imagine how they would like their own farm. All the characters have fantasies and live a life in their dreams. In â€Å"Of Mice Of Men† dreams are never achieved because of the circumstances. It is Curley’s wife who puts all stops to dreams and makes George realise that Lennie is no longer useful to him. George feels that nothing will ever be achieved with Lennie around because he will always keep you back because of his childlike manners and actions. Dreams are never achieved at the time all of the characters are set in. Nothing is settled in the 1930’s as the depression has happened. Any character who seems to have a dream seems to get himself into trouble. The relationship between George and Lennie was perfect for a dream to come true, but if only Lennies simpleness did not mean his strength was uncontrollable. If Curley’s wife didn’t flirt with Lennie he would have been ok. Lennie got too nervous that’s why he ended up killing Curley’s wife when she screamed. Dreams are also never achieved because of each of the characters themselves. For example: how Curley acts. If Curley wasn’t such a mean person George might not have killed Lennie. Dreams are very important to the plot â€Å"Of Mice Of Men.† Dreams are what carry people on from their loneliness and there bad times. Dreams are needed for every character who is lonely. When a character in â€Å"Of Mice of Men† gets lonely he/she thinks about a dream which they want to come true. With dreams characters can imagine anything they want to and this will keep them happy if nothing else does. Steinbeck is saying that anybody can get lonely and unhappy sometimes but anyone can have dreams to help them through bad times, it just depends on how deeply that lonely person can imagine there dreams.

In this case, summary frames will allow students to learn about where their animal lives, what it eats and what it provides for humans. Reinforcing effort and providing recognition can push students to make an extra effort when they don’t feel like doing schoolwork or when the work is challenging. It is important for teachers to show students the connection between effort and achievement (Marzano, et al, 2001). The visit to the farm will be a fun activity for students and they will excited about doing something different so they will all most likely complete their note taking well. However, computers can cause frustration, particularly for first graders who are still emerging readers and have a hard time navigating the Internet. Therefore, the Pause, Prompt and Praise strategy will be useful. When students get frustrated or discouraged while using the computer, the teacher can initiate a short pause so the student can collect his or her thoughts. Next, the teacher can give specific suggestions to help the student complete the assigned task. Last, the teacher can praise the student for correcting his or her error as well as completing the task (Marzano, et al, 2001). Nonlinguistic representations will be included in this lesson plan. Students will include drawings of farm animals in their original note taking and research done while at the farm. These drawings will elaborate on the information that students are learning (Marzano, et al, 2001). One of the colloquialisms about women is that they are the ‘weaker sex’. While this comment is primarily intended to address physical strength, it also denotes a social attitude that women are also emotionally and intellectually weaker than men. As biological creatures, women are plagued with shifting hormones that effect their emotions, just as men are filled with testosterone that impacts on their anger. This has been used as an excuse to place women in a subservient role throughout history. Helmer in Ibsen’s play makes this point of imposing a subservience on women which has an implied sense that they lack intellectual capacity as he minimizes Nora through condescension. He calls her â€Å"The same little feather head.â€Å" and makes statements like â€Å"That is like a woman!â€Å", making diminishing commentaries and generalizations about the state of being a woman (Ibsen 6). While women have been considered the ’weaker sex’, during the time that Ibsen wrote his play women were gathering and making great demonstrations of strength towards accomplishing goals. Most of these goals were based upon securing freedom from the oppressed. Many of the great social movements of history, particularly in the late 19th century when Ibsen’s play was written, were started and run by women. Suffrage, as it was experienced in England, was accomplished through hun ger strikes that lasted for long periods of time with attacks made by guards to force tubes down their throats in order to force feed those who had starved themselves to make a point about women’s rights. The abolitionists in the United States were primarily women who worked to keep the underground railroad open in order to smuggle slaves out of the south and into freedom. Women participated in openly and dangerously protesting slavery until it was abolished. When motivated, women have shown great strength of conviction against a patriarchal system that through most of history has kept them as chattel. However, oppressions within the domestic sphere have worked against many women as they have tried to free themselves from the social pressures of gender identity as it is interpreted as weakness. In Ibsen’s play, A Doll’s House, he explores the differences between the domestic sphere and the public sphere as his female character, Nora, searches for emancipation fr om being subjected to infantilism which has led to her being treated as a child within her marriage. In an exchange about sweets, Helmer treats her like a naughty child, tempting her to admit to having gone to the confectionary to indulge in candy. He says that she looks uneasy and commands her to look straight at him to judge her honesty. Linear Variable Differential Transformer and Strain Gauge Transducer There are many types of transducers displacement measurements, Linear variable differential transformer (LVDT), capacitive transducer, potentiometer transducer, resistive transducer, optical transducer, etc. For our experiments purpose we use the LVDT, since its able to produce high output for relatively small displacement and for strain measurement we use the strain gauge transducer. Linear Variable Differential Transformer(LVDT): The linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) is a type of electrical transformer used for measuring linear displacement. The transformer has three solenoid coils placed end-to-end around a tube. The centre coil is the primary, and the two outer coils are the secondarys. A cylindrical ferromagnetic core, attached to the object whose position is to be measured, slides along the axis of the tube, the figure below shows the construction of the LVDT. When an alternative current is applied into the primary coil, a voltage is induced in each secondary core; those voltages are directly proportional to the mutual inductance induced with the primary. As the core moves, these mutual inductances change, causing the voltages induced in the secondarys to change. The coils are connected in reverse series, so that the output voltage is the difference between the two secondary voltages. When the core is in its central position,the distance between the two secondarys is equal ,hence equal but opposite voltages are induced in these two coils, so the output voltage is zero. When the core is displaced in one direction, the voltage in one coil increases as the other decreases, causing the output voltage0 to increase from zero to a maximum. This voltage is in phase with the primary voltage. When the core moves in the other direction, the output voltage also increases from zero to a maximum, but its phase is opposite to that of the primary. The magnitude of the output voltage is proportional to the distance moved by the core (up to its limit of travel), which is why the device is described as linear. The phase of the voltage indicates the direction of the displacement. Because the sliding core does not touch the inside of the tube, it can move with little friction, making the LVDT a highly reliable device. LVDTs are commonly used for position feedback in servo-mechanisms, and for automated measurement in machine tools, control systems, robots, and many other industrial and mechanical systems. Strain Gauge: Strain gauge transducers are kind of sensors that transduce(convert) strain applied into an electrical signal ( usually voltage) for the purpose of pressure sensors applications, force and torque measurements. It was invented by Edward E. Simmons and Arthur C. Ruge in 1938, the most common type of strain gauge consists of an insulating flexible backing which supports a metallic foil pattern. A strain gauge is simply a resistor, whose value varies with strain in the material to which it is bonded. They can be used in various fields when a readable value needed to be modeled from a force or strain applications. The construction of the strain gauge sensor is as shown in the following figure. As seen in the figure it has a fine resistance wire, sensitive for load weights. Objectives: To obtain a characteristics of the LVDT and Strain gauge sensor. The body whose displacement is to be measured is connected to the iron core. According to Haresh Khemani in Jan 28, 2010, graduate of Mechanical Engineering from University of Pune, India, LVDT comprises of the differential transformer that provides the AC voltage output proportional to the displacement of the core passing through the windings.. According to him too, LVDT is basically a differential transformer, whose voltage output is linear to the displacement of the object hence it is given the name linear variable differential transformer. Meanwhile, according to Measurement Specialties Incorporation.,a leading global designer and manufacturer of sensors and sensor-based systems, An LVDT, or Linear Variable Differential Transformer, is a transducer that converts a linear displacement or position from a mechanical reference (or zero) into a proportional electrical signal containing phase (for direction) and amplitude information (for distance).. According to this company, the operation does not require electrical contact between the moving part (probe or core rod assembly) and the transformer, but rather relies on electromagnetic coupling; this and the fact that they operate without any built-in electronic circuitry are the primary reasons why LVDTs have been widely used in applications where long life and high reliability under severe environments are a required, such Military/Aerospace applications. LVDT have been used widely in many applications. Companies such as Trans-Tek Inc. had done so many applications on LVDT such as LVDT use in ATM to Sense Dollar Bills by using miniature transducers, such as the Series 230 AC-AC LVDT. The low mass core is ideal for systems with low driving forces or high acceleration and, therefore, will not adversely influence the delicate nature of these applications. One application requiring a miniature LVDT is the multiple bill detector of an automated teller machine, or ATM. This mechanism is capable of detecting single, double and triple bills, as well as folded, taped, overlapping and soiled bills. Combining an AC-AC LVDT with the necessary electrical components will result in a relatively low-cost system with high-end performance. Strain Gauge According to National Instrument, Strain is the amount of deformation of a body due to an applied force. More specifically, it is defined as the fractional change in length, As shown below it can be seen that strain can be positive (tensile) or negative(compressive) depending on the direction of force given. The strain gauge is one of the commonly used strain measurement sensors. It is a resistive elastic unit that changes in resistance is a function of applied strain. Where R is the resistance,  Ã‚ ¥ is the strain, and S is the strain sensitivity factor of the gage material (gage factor in some books). The majority of strain gauges are foil types, available in a wide choice of shapes and sizes to suit a variety of applications. They consist of a pattern of resistive foil which is mounted on a backing material. They operate on the principle that as the foil is subjected to stress, the resistance of the foil changes in a defined way. According to University of Massachusetts Lowell, strain gauge is a sensor used to transfer a mechanical strain to a quantifiable output. The strain gauge has a resistance which changes as a function of mechanical strain. Although the change in resistance can be quantified using an ohm meter, signal conditioning is used to convert the change in resistance to a voltage. The voltage may then be amplified, thus reducing quantization errors. The relationship between the input strain and the output voltage may be determined using the system sensitivity. In practice, strain measurement involves quantities larger than few milistrain, Therefore, to measure the strain; it requires accurate measurement of very small changes in resistance. To measure such small change, strain gauges are always used in a bridge configuration with voltage excitation source just like the Wheatstone bridge shown below From the equation, when R1/R2=R3/R4, output will be zero. Under this condition, bridge is in balance state. Any change of resistance will give value to output voltage. So if R4 is to be change into active strain gauge, any changes in the gauge resistance will unbalance the bridge and produce nonzero output voltage. It is a strain gauge for use in certain medical applications, such as sensing the occurrence of an apnea event. The device is also applicable to monitoring mechanical motion associated with other medical conditions. The strain gauge actually measures the change in DC resistance produced by stretching and compression of a number of carbon deposits coupled in series on a longitudinally extendible substrate. This extendibility is produced by suitably die cutting a flexible but inherently inelastic insulative substrate. The easily produced device may be used externally or encapsulated for implantation. Meanwhile in 1987, Strain gauge scale for weighing fish patented by Reder, Lawrence H. It is a portable scale particularly for weighing fish and normally hand held and which includes a strain gauge for sensing the weight of a fish and the strain gauge providing a leg of a Wheatstone Bridge to provide the measuring of the strain placed upon a member to which the fish is attached. The unit includes battery sources for the required power and includes an LED display unit for reading of the weight of the fish. A zero set may be incorporated in the circuitry or a reset to zero reading may be provided. The unit provides a portable, accurate scale for weighing of fish and the unit may also include selective sensing circuitry for reading of other inputs such as temperature of water. 2.0 Methodology: In this experiment we are using the DIGIAC 1750,Digital-multimeter and oscilloscope. LDVT: Its intended to measure the rectified output voltage using a digital multimeter set on the range of 20V DC. The analog multimeter also used to compare the results when using it against a digital multimeter. The procedure for conducting this experiment are as follows: The circuit is connected as in Figure 6 with the digital multi-meter on the 2V DC range to monitor the output of the Full-Wave Rectifier. The power supply is switched ON. AC Amplifier gain is set to 1000. Gain Coarse and Gain Fine control of Amplifier #1 is set to 100 and 0.2 respectively for and adjusted to produce zero output with zero input. The core position is adjusted by rotating the operating screw to the neutral position to give minimum output voltage (voltage from the digital multi-meter). The result is recorded as in Table 1 below Table 1 The core control screw is rotated in steps of 1 turn for 4 turns in the clockwise direction and the result is recorded. Then the control screw is turned in the counter clockwise direction and the result is recorded. The graph of output voltage from the analog meter readings against core position is plotted. Strain Gauge: The circuit is connected as in Figure 7 below. Amplifier#1 coarse gain is set to 100 The power supply is switched on and the offset control of Amplifier#1 is set to produce zero voltage output under no load condition. Another set of ten coins (20 cents) are placed on the load platform and the steps from 4 to 7 are repeated. Results and Analysis: Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) : The data shown in the following table shows the reading of both the analog and digital multi-meter for 4 turns in the clockwise and anti-clockwise directions after calibrating the core position into the initial neutral position. The results recorded in the table above then plotted on the graph in figure 11, showing the relationship between the output voltage for every respected trun of the core position. The result transformed from the table into the graph resembles the theoretical graph. The maximum negative and positive turn generate maximum voltage. When the turn is at neutral position, the voltage is almost zero indicate that both secondary coils have slightly same value. The graph is not perfectly a straight line due to external disturbance such as electromagnetic field source came from hand phone and other devices Strain Gauge: For this experiment we used two different types of loads with different weights, one with 10 cent coins and the other using 20 cent coins. The purpose of using those two different loads is to ensure accuracy and precision since the output should be the same as long the threshold values are set to be the same for both types.   The plot graph in figure 12 shows number of loads (10 cent) vs. output voltage is a transformation of the readable data into realistic form, which show linearity between the output voltage and the weight of a load. When no load is applied on the strain gauge, the voltage measured is 0V indicated that there is no resistance on the device. Using 10 cent coin, the graph generated is as expected, a linear graph To test the consistency, we used 20 cent coin and the graph generated is almost same as 10 cent coin experiment. 4.0 Discussion: 4.1 LVDT: The outputs produced are actually small, like can be seen in the data record for Digital multi-meter. So amplifiers are used to amplify the output so that the pattern of the output can be observed more clearly. Then, mathematical expression can be obtained. Let say, 9V is the highest output voltage that can be obtained. By using linear equation y = mx + c y is the output voltage x is the number of turns m is the sensitivity c is the displacement/offset For Expected Output: c = 0 because the values touches y axis at 0V. m= (9-0) / (4-0) = 2..25 V/turn So the mathematical expression is: y = 2.25|x|, since for -ve turn, the output is same for +ve turn. For Experimental Output: c = 0.5 For +ve turn, averagely, m = (9-0.5) / (4-0) = 2.125 V/turn So the mathematical expression is: y = 2.125x + 0.5; for positive turn For -ve turn, averagely, m = -(8-0.5) / (4-0) = -1.875 V/turn So the mathematical expression is: y = -1.875x + 0.5; for negative turn Even though the output generated is increasing as the number of turns increases, but the pattern of output readings are not smooth just like the expected output. It can be seen in figure below that the experimental values are not totally linear because the increasing rate is not consistent. This might happen because of LVDT disadvantage which is sensitive to stray magnet field. So, during the experiment, any electronic devices that produces magnetic field such as cell phone and notebook must be avoided to be close to the LVDT In term of waveform generated, it can be seen as in figure 15 that during the zero turn, the output voltage is in same phase as input, except the amplitude is lower. Meanwhile during positive turns, the output is lagging the input and the voltage amplitude is higher. As for the negative turn, the output is leading the output and the amplitude is higher. Strain Gauge Same like the LVDT experiments, the output produced by strain gauge is small, so it is amplified by the amplifier to make the observation more clearly. As illustrated in figure 16, it can be seen that the value of output increase as the number of load increases. By doing this experiment using two types of load, the consistency of the system can be tested. By using 10 cent and 20 cent coins as load, two data sets obtained. There are some differences in the values of the output of these two data. It suppose to give the same value no matter what type of load is used since the value of offset and maximum output have already been set at the beginning of the experiment. This might happen because of the external force as example, from the hand when putting the load on the platform and also from the pressure of the room that are not consistent. Even a small change in pressure of environment can affect the output because output from the strain gauge is amplified by 100. For the mathematical expression for this experiment can be obtain by using the same method as LVDT. Maurice Sendak Maurice Sendak was born June 10, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were poor immigrants from Poland who came to America before World War I. Many of his relatives died in the Holocaust, and this was an important influence upon his childhood. His parents were always upset about the relatives they had lost and the cloud of death was always in the air. He even drew the faces of some of his relatives who died in the Holocaust in Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Zlateh the Goat. Sendak is the youngest of three children. He was also a very sickly child, who always caught pneumonia or some sort of illness. He grew up under the constant fear of his own death. His mother was very concerned, and always kept a watchful eye over him. For this reason, many of Sendak's books have a picture of a moon in the scene. This is representative of his watchful protective mother, peeking over him to make sure he is safe. (Sendak also puts a fish in pictures for his father. â€Å"Sendak† not only means â€Å"fish†, but also is a remembrance that there is always something fishy in all of his work.) Sendak grew up in a family of storytellers. His father told (uncensored) stories that were considered â€Å"not for children.† They were nightmarishly scary stories of pogroms, death, love affairs, and other Jewish tales. His brother wrote stories, and his sister bound the stories into books that they sold on the sidewalks. Sendak loved hearing his father tell stories, and associates good books with being close and spending time with his father. Everyone in his family also read stories, and growing up, Sendak was jealous of his older siblings who could read words. He would even beg his sister to bring him books from the library (as opposed to children’s books), just so he could smell, touch, and taste them. His sister also gave him his first book, The Prince and the Pauper, by Mark Twain. Although he could not even read it at the time, Sendak slept with the book, and still has it today. In 1947, at the age of nineteen, Sendak co-authored and published his first book, Atomics for the Millions. He began his illustrating career by drawing comic book pictures. In 1951, Sendak began freelance illustrating and writing. Sendak published Kenny’s Window in 1956. It is a story about a child who is curious about the world outside of his front door. Civil Disobedience and the Abusive Power of Government In response to the annexation of Texas in 1845 by the United States, Henry David Thoreau's wrote the essay, Civil Disobedience.   Thoreau felt that this purely economic move by the United States expedited the Civil War, which he, and many Americans, disapproved of.   In his essay, Thoreau argues that government should not be in control of the people and that the people should be able to rule themselves freely however they please.   In addition, he clearly states and points out that in many instances it is best when individual rights take priority over state authority.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Very often, the best authors, whether it be of a novel or an essay, clearly state their opinions and facts using various literary techniques and devices.   From reading other Thoreau works, such as excerpts from Walden and Excursions, I was able to infer that he has his own unique, unmatched writing style.   Most ordinary and banal writers start their essays with long, tedious descriptions of the point they are trying to convey.   But like all great writers and thinkers, Thoreau begins his essay with a strong, captivating sentence: "That government is best which governs least" (222).   Thoreau's opening line grabs and lets the reader know what topic(s) the essay will be discussing.   As it turns out, this opening sentence is the basis for the rest of his essay as he encourages individuals to take responsibility for keeping the government in constant check.   He believes that the best way for a country and its people to survive is if individuals are willing to exert control over the government and not be ruled like sheep.   Part of Thoreau's writing style includes using examples to justify his op... ...are fighting for.   When he talks about the evils of slavery, Thoreau states that "When the majority shall at length vote for the abolition of slavery, it will be because they are indifferent to slavery, or because there is but little slavery left to be abolished by their vote. They will then be the only slaves. Only his vote can hasten the abolition of slavery who asserts his own freedom by his vote" (226).   As a dedicated abolitionist, he believes that only individuals hold the power to end slavery.   He thinks that you cannot depend on the government to stop slavery because it thinks as a whole, and not as individuals.   As he concludes his essay, Thoreau's main point is that individual power should be greater than that of the government. Thoreau's observation, "That government is best which governs least" continues to be as true today as the day it was written.

This has caused him to make assumptions after the meanings he has added to his observations.Rentals' claims that if a Barracking had behaved in an equally obstruct manner he would have reacted in the same way. He claims there are also other people in the company, also expatriates, who felt the same. Baker assumed because Rentals was a Barracking that he would not get along with expatriate senior managers and he was racially conscious. When, In reality, he was of a new Barnacle generation, who was well educated and professional, open to people of other cultures. Because of Baker's assumptions about Rentals he took action without adjusting or realizing his ladder of Inference, damaging the relationship further.Lastly, the reflexive loop, which determines our beliefs that influence what data we will select next time, influences the way Baker continuously feels about Rentals. He continuously feels as thought he has to c orrect Rentals way of being racially conscious without asking Rentals what exactly is going on or how he feels about the situation. Communicating across cultures can be difficult and challenging for all employees in a company, including senior level management. Consider the Christmas dinner where Dante defended herself by stating â€Å"a priest would not be a priest if he did not tell his flock what is right and what is wrong†(31). The underlying sense of anger in this scene originates from how Mr. Casey and Mr. Dedalus are contempt with the lack of Irish independence from England. This political background is key to Stephen’s approach in his journey of becoming an artist. A parallel can be drawn to the theme of independence, and following one’s own journey rather than the road others lay out. Furthermore, as a young adult Stephen finds himself rather discontent with Ireland as his ancestors â€Å"allowed a handful of foreigners to subject them†(203). This again references Ireland’s lack of independence. Stephen eventually opts to dep art his home because Ireland’s lack of freedom was not propelling him towards his singular destiny of becoming an artist. Here Stephen was so dissatisfied with his home that out of frustration for an individually compelling environment, he leaves. These political references to emphasize independence and freedom in both the country and individual soul render late 19th century Ireland as essential to generating Joyce’s arguments. Joyce’s mockery of hypocritical religious institutions that ruled Irish society at the time emphasizes Stephen’s struggle over whether or not society was to feed his destiny or not. To begin with, society stressed upon him the indisputable influence of religion. Therefore Stephen became contrite over his sins with women. After â€Å"he had confessed and God had pardoned him, his soul was made fair and holy once more, holy and happy†(145). Joyce clearly wanted to depict the oppressing and shallow nature of Irish society that revolved around religion. The Irish background adds on to the void feeling Stephen has even upon technically doing all that he was told by the institutions. Although the setting served to build the background to concepts Joyce wanted to portray, the actual ideas manifested throughout the novel are relevant to human nature regardless of generation and location. To begin with, Stephen never truly grasps the concept of â€Å"home.† As a young child he was sent to boarding school, and after returning he was constantly moving from house to house. Gradually â€Å"a vague dissatisfaction grew up within him as he looked on the quays and on the river and on the lowering skies†(66-67). From a young age Stephen grows up in a home that lacked stability. He was never able to find comfort in his own home. This dissatisfaction is universal to humans, for people find discomfort in trying to not only find their identities, but also find their destiny to where they fit in to the universe. This abstract concept is applied to Stephen as his search for identity is paralleled to truly finding his â€Å"home,† a place of security and feeli ng of belonging. It is only human nature to want to have a rightful place. Throughout the novel, Joyce masterfully takes advantage of incorporating Ireland into all aspects of the novel from its setting to character names to society. These compel the novel to be exactly that – an Irish novel. However when taking a step back, one can see that as a Bildungsroman, the theme of ones journey in search of ones destiny or place in the universe is applicable to all. Humans have an innate desire to feel at â€Å"home.† Joyce urges the reader to notice the ups and downs to hunting down what one believes is his or her destiny regardless of the rest of one’s community rather than rationally thinking through what is best for the situation.
